I got a letter from my GP today saying that I am allowed to go ahead and book an appointment with the fertility clinic - my appointment is the 17th Dec in 6 weeks time! Just wondered what happens on your first appointment?
The first appointment is really more of a consultation. You will meet the RE, discuss your medical history, your partner's, your cycles, your family history and any testing that you have done with your GP regarding fertility.
The RE will go over any additional testing that he/she may want to do - things like bloodwork to check your thyroid, cycle day 3 bloodwork to check follicle stimulating hormones (FSH) which can help to see that your egg quality and quantity is good, cycle day 21 blood work to check ovulation and progesterone levels, semen analysis for your partner and maybe an hsg to check to see that your tubes are not blocked.
Pay special attention to what the RE wants to do - you might want to bring a calendar because a lot of things are on certain cycle days. They might also schedule a follow up appointment for after the testing has been done to discuss treatment plans.
Remember that you are "interviewing" the doctor, too - find out what their philosphy is, how do they feel about multiple births (I like my RE because he tries to reduce the chance for multiples and has had numerous twin pregnancies in his practice but only 2 triplets ever and never more). Do they have any other services available such as a nutritionist, acupuncture, counseling, financial assistance / payment plans? What are their hours? My clinic was open 7 days a week and I actually had a successful IVF cycle on Christmas Day - it meant a lot that they were there to move forward when my body was ready instead of trying to force my cycle to conform to the calendar or cancelling. I also liked that they had early morning hours so that I could go in for tests, ultrasounds etc . . . before work.
Hope this helps!
Best wishes and loads of baby dust!!!

2008 Nov 06 2Mostly lots of talking and looking at medical records and I had a lot of paper work I had to fill out prior to the appointment that we went over. I also took in all my BBT charts. Depending on what tests you have had and where you are in your cycle, you will probably get some blood work done and other basic tests.
Good luck

Been there - went through a year of treatments including Clomid, injectible fertility medications, 6 IUI cycles and finally IVF. My twins are now 10 weeks old.

2008 Nov 07 4They will ask you some questions - how long you’ve been trying for, any pre-exisitng medical conditions which might be a factor in infertility, then they will schedule you for some basic tests to be done, a sperm analysis for your husband, blood tests for you and maybe an ultrasound. Thats pretty much all they’ll do at the first appointment.
Good luck!

2008 Nov 07 5at our appointment they consultant asked how long we had been trying and asked us if we had been pregnant before and asked if my husband had got anyone pregnant before. what our occupations were???? lol…. she then said that i had to be put in for a dye test xray to see if any of my tubes were blocked, i also had to have blood test for hepititus and then she told me to ring in a week to get my results on the hepititus. she said she would prescribe me with 50mg of clomid and i had to have a scan on day 11 to see the size of the follies and also to have another blood test on day 21.
i have taken so much time off work with this fertility stuff.
goodluck
