Despite economic strangulation, a high infant mortality rate, and a better chance of children dying due to warfare than getting a college education, Palestine still has the highest Total Fertility Rating in the North Africa/Southwest Asia region. Anyone have a an idea why this might be?
In Arab culture, children are considered to be the ultimate blessing. Families are often considered successful by the number of children they have, rather than by the amount of money they have. The Palestinians, while educated about birth control, simply have no desire for the 2.5 child ideal prevalent among Western society.
Additionally, in most Third World countries, children are a safegaurd against poverty. Since Palestinians live largely in poverty, the more children a family has, the more money can be circulated. For example, if the Sawan family has six children, when those children grow up, their combined incomes are used to take care of the family at large. If there had been only one child, then chances are the child (once he’s grown up) will not be able to get a good enough job to support both his parents and his own family.
